To mark the centenary of the opening of the former Hospital de Jornaleros (a hospital for labourers, now the headquarters of the department of transport of the regional government of Madrid), the directorate general for cultural heritage of Madrid’s regional government, with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española, the Instituto Cervantes, the Círculo de Bellas Artes and Madrid city council CentroCentro, has put together a programme of activities aimed at familiarising the people of Madrid with the work of Antonio Palacios.
These activities consist of guided tours, a series of lectures and a programme of open-air concerts. The website www.antoniopalacios.es contains all the details of the cultural offering related to the centenary.
Antonio Palacios was one of the most important and influential architects in Spain during the first half of the twentieth century. He designed some of Madrid’s landmark buildings, helping transform the former Baroque city into a modern metropolis. As well as living permanently in Madrid and producing some of his best known works there, he always remained bound by cultural and professional ties to his native Galicia. Palacios reached the height of his architectural production between 1910 and 1926. Many of his buildings have survived the passage of time thanks to architectural refurbishments to convert them to new uses. For example, three of his most representative buildings in Madrid now house private and state institutions: the Palacio de Comunicaciones (now the city hall), the Hospital de Jornaleros de Maudes (now the department of transport of Madrid’s regional government), the Casa de las Cariátides (headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes) and the Círculo de Bellas Artes (fine arts circle) in Madrid.
CONCERTS
During the month of July, as part of the MusaE programme, AC/E is organising a series of open-air concerts in the courtyard of the former hospital. These musical soirées will be held at sunset every Friday in July and will feature music from Antonio Palacios’s day, transporting audiences back in time to the music scene of early twentieth-century Madrid. At these concerts, for which attendees must previously register (www.antoniopalacios.es), young musicians will perform a repertoire chosen by Fundación Eutherpe.
Guided tours
More than 6,200 people will be able to enjoy free tours of Antonio Palacios’s four most representative buildings: the former Hospital de Jornaleros, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Banco Español del Río de la Plata and the Palacio de Comunicaciones. The guides are specialists in heritage and cultural management. To take part in this initiative, which will run from June to December 2016, it is necessary to register previously on the website www.antoniopalacios.es
There will also be a number of thematic routes for self-guided tours of other Madrid buildings designed by Antonio Palacios originally as housing, shops and for industrial and transport use. The microsite provides users with textual and visual information needed to enjoy the architect’s designs independently.
LECTURES
A series of lectures on Antonio Palacios’s work is scheduled for October and November at various venues. On Tuesdays in October and November architects and historians specialised in Antonio Palacios and his work will examine significant aspects of the Galician architect’s design and production as well as the recent projects for conserving and refurbishing his most outstanding buildings. Free attendance until all seats filled.
