Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Institut Français are promoting exchanges of artists and professionals from the cultural sector through an open call for applications from artists who reside and carry out their activity in Spain. The residency period is structured into three parts: the first will be at Etopia Center for Art & Technology (Zaragoza), jointly organised with Fundación Zaragoza Ciudad del Conocimiento; and the second and third at MA Scène Nationale- Pays de Montbelíard.
The aim of these residencies is to facilitate the establishment of collaboration networks; to promote the mobility of national creators abroad; to encourage artistic production by providing residencies and available working spaces for artists and curators; and to strengthen links between cultural institutions of France and Spain.
The residencies were open to natural and not-for-profit legal persons with legal capacity. Applicants had to be related to the visual arts and reside or be mainly active in Spain, and must have providee proof of their career or incorporation. Given the characteristics of the project to be developed and the conditions of the residency, group proposals were not accepted.
Smart Residencies is an artistic variation on the emerging concept of Intelligent Territory which designates a field that is constantly developing, open and sustainably managed. The aim of the project is to establish a link between artistic creation and the production of intelligence, the use of technology, and urban public space for connecting two different territories.
In consonance with a plural and connected society where technology is increasingly intertwined with daily life, the purpose of Smart Residencies is to carry out a creative project jointly between the two chosen artists throughout the successive residency periods and to create an artistic device that allows the inhabitants of two European cities, Montbéliard and Zaragoza, to be involved in real time.
Residency in Spain. Etopia Center for Art & Technology (Zaragoza)
A residency was available for an artist living in Spain to travel to Zaragoza and stay at Etopia from 1 to 31 October 2014. During this time the artist coincides with the chosen French artist in order to start on the joint work.
Residency in France. MA Scène Nationale (Montbéliard)
After the residency in Zaragoza is over, the chosen Spanish artist enjoys two residency periods in France in order to develop his or her work individually during the first period and again jointly with the chosen French artist in the second period: the first is from 24 November to 20 December 2014 and the second is in March 2015 (coinciding with the chosen French artist).
