The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has designated Dubai as the city that will host the Universal Exhibition in 2020. The central theme of the Expo 2020 Dubai is "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future" and it will a platform to foster creativity, innovation, and global collaboration. The Expo wants to trigger new thinking for a long-term effect in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) and the wider world. This is underpinned by three interwoven themes that are fundamental in addressing the most pressing issues of our time: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.
Expo 2020 Dubai will be the first World Expo held in the MEASA region, and the first hosted by an Arab nation. With one-third of the world’s population living within a four-hour flight time, the UAE is a hub that facilitates the exchange of ideas and cultures. As a global crossroads, Dubai is ideally placed to host a World Expo, providing a unique platform for the global community to address critical issues and explore creative solutions together.

Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) is the public agency in charge of managing Spain’s presence at Universal and International Exhibitions. AC/E is working with various ministries and the Spanish Embassy in the United Arab Emirates to best organize the Spain Pavilion in Expo Dubai 2020 #ExpoSpain2020.
The architectural project of the Spain Pavilion "People and Places" was proposed by the studio Amman-Cánovas-Maruri (Temperaturas Extremas Architectos S.L.P.) that won the open contest organized by AC/E (see report) and that was especially valued by the jury for its iconic strength, its sustainability criteria and a design based on the idea of total recycling of its materials.
The Pavilion, of about 6,000 m2, gives prominence to a large square covered by a series of conical volumes that have a climatic function to temper the public space. The square offers a series of domes covered with various materials that make reference to the most traditional insulation techniques in combination with innovative solutions. It responds to the principles of circular economy and offers solutions that make it possible to plan a second life for the whole or some of its parts.
