Limburgs Museum museale taken –waar dat wenselijk is– van de Floriade overneemt.
Een van de belangrijkste landeninzendingen op de Floriade is die van Spanje. Toen het Limburgs Museum door Acción Cultural Española werd ge- vraagd, in het kader van de Floriade, medewerking te verlenen aan een tentoonstelling over de collectie van Johannes le Francq van Berkhey (1729-1812) werd niet lang getwijfeld. Deze oorspronkelijk Nederland- se collectie, die in 1785 door de Spaanse Kroon werd verworven, is een van de belangrijkste verzamelingen ter wereld van beeldmateriaal over plant- en dier- kunde. De bladen zijn van zo’n hoge kwaliteit dat ze niet alleen van belang zijn voor biologisch onderzoek, ze laten ook de kunsthistorische betekenis zien van deze tekeningen en gravures uit de zestiende tot en met de achttiende eeuw. De collectie wordt al lange tijd uitstekend beheerd door Museo Nacional de Ci- encias Naturales en de Real Jardín Botánico. Dankzij de medewerking van deze instituten was het ook mo- gelijk werken uit de collectie van Le Francq van Berkhey weer in Nederland te tonen. Behalve een tentoonstelling van bloemtekeningen in museum Naturalis te Leiden, werd een meer uitgebreide se- lectie van bladen met plant- en diervoorstellingen in de slotperiode van de Floriade gepresenteerd in het Limburgs Museum te Venlo. Daarmee bleef een van de mooiste bijdragen aan de Floriade bewaard voor een verrassend en prachtig slotakkoord.
Over the last few years, the Province of Limburg and the joint municipalities in the Venlo Region have been preparing the seventh World Horticul- tural Expo, the Floriade 2012. A Floriade has been organised at a major natural site that will represent a real experience for millions of visitors thanks to the clustering of themes and the presentations by very diverse countries. What is new is the way in
which the Floriade has been embedded in the sur- rounding area. Historical relics from prehistoric to modern times carry information from times past and, thanks to that genius loci, offer insight into how man has always tried to eke out a living in a changing natural environment, whereby plants and animals were essential to his survival.
For the Venlo Region, the Floriade is the big- gest event ever organised here, so it has been seized as an opportunity to provide key impulses for the community and, among other things, to create an infrastructure that, even after the Floriade, will con- tribute to a strong region and a good place to be for local residents and their guests. Not only were new roads, transport connections, business parks and car parks created, but lodging facilities and existing amenities have also been improved.
One of those improvements relates to the alterations to the Limburgs Museum. The Lim- burgs Museum is the cultural history museum of the Province of Limburg situated in the heart of Venlo, at the also renovated Stationsplein and Keulsepoort. The energy facilities in the museum were made sustainable in 2011. At the same time, the museum was extended with exhibition spaces for the archaeological and cultural history presenta- tions, as well as for alternating exhibitions. During the year of the Floriade, the refurbished museum can then show how man in Limburg has given shape to his life from the beginning of time until modern days. The alternating exhibitions in 2012 will focus above all on art and cultural history topics related to the Floriade.
The facilities at the Floriade are not of mu- seum quality, which means that no presentations can be provided there that need to meet museum standards of security, light, temperature and relative humidity. For that reason it was agreed that the nearby Limburgs Museum would take over muse- um functions – where needed – from the Floriade.
