The profile of digital readers in Spain
This data can be complemented by further analyses of specific profiles that are often sup- plied by cloud reading platforms which analyse user conduct. In 2015 Nubico, Telefónica’s sub- scription reading service, made one of the first attempts at defining the profile of Spain’s digital readers.46
Digital readers are typically single and still living with their parents or couples with children aged under 18. They furthermore tend to be city dwellers who mostly read digitally on their devices while travelling on public transport (though they prefer to read at home, which the abovementioned CIS report also cites as readers’ favourite reading place). According to this report, the rate of digital readers in Spain stood at 18% in 2015, nearly seven percentage points higher than in the CIS report.
In 2015 the cloud reading platform 24Symbols also published data and an infographic on the particular characteristics of digital readers by gender.47
24Symbols’ female readers greatly outnumbered male readers (74% versus 26%), much more strik- ingly than in the case of Nubico, where although there was a difference it was less marked (66.5% versus 57.6%).
As well as being more numerous, female readers of 24Symbols displayed more voracious reading habits: they skimmed through more books, underlined more texts and took more notes, as well as finishing more books. And they showed a greater concern with commenting on what they were reading, though male readers were more interested in creating and sharing bookshelves with their recommendations.
Preferences when it came to devices were the same as for Nubico readers, with smartphones and tablets greatly preferred to e-readers.
