see how formal symmetry has been broken or upset, and the same occurs in Doble simultáneo (Double Simultaneous) as in Lo blanco en lo negro (White
in Black). They are formal similarities without material correspondence, an evident inequality of appearances and a covert difference. In many other cases the formal repetition of something does not imply any symmetry. Symmetry has also been used as a psychoanalytical device, an image of the mind, a dialecti- cal apparatus that corresponds to the activity of our own vision.
GM Don’t you think that one of the primary concerns of today’s artists should be to make the contemporary individual aware of the need to learn to live in a new political space that is different in content and scope to the one experi- enced so far; in other words, to propose a new, multiform dialectic, a new, absolutely different space of opinion?
FS Absolutely. But don’t forget that the artistic, understood as a poetic, neither asks permission to enter nor follows guidelines or moral orders, however exemplary and necessary they may be, and it is loath to propagandise politi- cal ideas or serve a cause. Art is unreliable, as it is indomitable by nature; it is not easily subjugated and its sense of justice does not act by mandate. The essence of art is freedom of thought and action, and its solidarity lies in its infinite generosity, as it gives everything it has without keeping anything for itself. As Karl Kraus said, art “serves to rinse out our eyes”.
