Culture in its different aspects is, without a doubt, one of the main assets of the Comuni- dad de Castilla y León. In this respect, support for creativity—either by facilitating and promoting the exhibition and dissemination of the work of our most brilliant creators, or by helping new artists become established—is one of our most important aims.
Therefore, at the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Junta de Castilla y León, and through the efforts of the MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, work is constantly being carried out on projects to show, promote and conduct research on the output of artists who are important names both within and outside our region.
Based in Castile and León from an early age, Fernando Sinaga (Zaragoza, 1951) has been significantly active along these lines in our region, specifically in the city of Salamanca, not only as an artist but also as a research scholar and lecturer at Salamanca University.
An indisputable ambassador both nationally and internationally, Sinaga has taken his oeuvre together with Castilla y León all over the world, particularly France, Germany and the United States. The work of this artist, who is both a sculptor and a theoretician, is based on the principles of minimalism and enriched by optical research from the 1960s to the present day.
From June to September 2011, the Department of Culture and Tourism staged a retrospec- tive exhibition at the MUSAC curated by Gloria Moure: Ideas K, focusing on his indepen- dent nature and the richness and complexity of his oeuvre.
The aims of the Department of Culture and Tourism regarding the internationalisation
of our cultural heritage and the strengthening of our links with Portugal are consonant with those of AC/E, Acción Cultural Española, which promotes and disseminates Spain’s cultural reality within and beyond our borders. Thanks to this collaboration, throughout 2012 the project will travel to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante (MACA) and to the Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais in Bragança, Portugal.
This publication, conceived as an extension of the exhibition activities, thus underlines the importance the Comunidad de Castilla y León attaches to the international dissemination of our cultural heritage.
