El Ángel Exterminador. A Room for Spanish Contemporary Art (eBook)

The exhibition featured recent Spanish art borrowed from El Ángel Exterminador (The Exterminating Angel), the classic movie directed by Buñuel and a seminal surrealist allegory that still maintains its power to incite the most varied interpretations on the very concept of the limit, both in aesthetic as well as social and ideological terms. This Buñelian plot structure serves as the pretext for an exhibition overviewing artistic creation in Spain since 2000. A succession of paintings, videos, installations, photographs, sculptures, performances and interventions from the field of dance, theatre or architecture, is enacted in a museum space allegorised as a mirror reflection of the imprisoning room in Buñuel’s movie. The creators of the exhibition have continued the idea of Buñuel’s claustrophobic room in the scenography: the exhibition halls have been converted into a series of small rooms that quickly feel like a maze in which visitors can work out their own routes, but also get lost.
