The Nueva Escuela de Cine y TV (NECTV, New school of cinema and television) of the university of VERITAS, with a 10-year track record, is the only university-level school of cinema in Central America. It is a vocational school where students learn by doing, where practice leads to theory and every class leaves the unmistakeable mark of experience, where they learn from mistakes, and where risk taking and curiosity are rewarded. At VERITAS’s Nueva Escuela de Cine y TV, cinema is viewed as thought and technology as a support for the creative and the intangible.
The Spanish filmmaker Yolanda Barrasa, a specialist in screenplay analysis, consultancy, writing and teaching, is taking part in the 2014 workshop with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española through the PICE mobility grants.
The university currently has 120 students. Several of the films made by them have won international awards at festivals and events such as the Festival de Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano of Havana, the Festival Ícaro (Guatemala), and the San José International Film Festival (Costa Rica). Many have also been selected for screening in the official selection of festivals such as Toulouse, Flanders, Henri Langlois, Viña del Mar, Lakino, Cinema Jove and FICUNAM (Mexico).
The NECTV’s list of past international guests includes Walter Lima Junior (Brazil), Jorge Sánchez (Mexico), Fabian Wagmister (USA), Manuel Pérez Estremera (Spain), Patrice Leconte (France), Paz Alicia Garciadiego (Mexico), Irma Dulmers (Netherlands), Tatiana Huezo (El Salvador), Veronica Riedel (Guatemala), Nancy Savoca (USA), Enric Rufas (Spain), Marc de Banville (France) and Marcelo Camorino (Argentina).
