"Improvisations". Familia Habichuela: Legendary Dynasties

In 2017 Town Hall’s introduced a new series called IMPROVISATIONS where masters and adventurous performers from multiple disciplines – music, theater, spoken word and more – play their craft in explorations of their unique artistic language. In March 2018, as part of the series "Improvisations", The Town Hall presents, with the support of AC/E,  an exclusive evening of two musical dynasties performing together, when the legendary Habichuela Family meets for the first time with Latin Jazz pioneers, the O'Farrill Family in an evening of largely improvised music.

The great flamenco guitar master Pepe Habichuela is the patriarch of one of the most revered families in Gypsy flamenco, Los Habichuela. Born in Granada, a mecca of flamenco, he celebrates 60 years of flamenco guitar rooted in tradition and innovation. Pepe is renowned for his historic collaborations with Enrique Morente, and as a trailblazer of “nuevo flamenco.” He is joined by his son, guitarist Josemi Carmona, who is known for his work in the groundbreaking Ketama band; rising vocal star Kiki Morente, son of Enrique Morente; Javier Colina, one of the finest bass players in flamenco; the outstanding percussionist Bandolero; and Alba Heredia. Appearing as special guest artists are two members of the celebrated O’Farrill family known for its remarkable influence in Afro-Cuban jazz: Grammy-winning pianist/composer Arturo O’Farrill, son of Chico O’Farrill and bandleader of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and his son, trumpeter/composer Adam O’Farrill, who has been heralded as a new voice in Afro-Cuban jazz.

The Town Hall’s mission is to present quality artistic performances for diverse audiences at affordable prices; to provide educational performances for youth at the Hall as well as outreach programs in schools and underserved communities throughout New York City; and to preserve The Town Hall’s historic and acoustically perfect auditorium for future generations.
