The 23
rd Nantes Spanish Film Festival (
Festival de Cine Español de Nantes) attracted 27,000 spectators in April 2013. The as yet unstoppable growth the festival has experienced clearly evidences French people’s interest in Spanish cinema in a city with no tradition of migration or exile and no Spanish consulate or Instituto Cervantes. The outstanding overall quality of Spanish films of 2012–13 was evident in the four sections of the competition (Official, Opera Prima, Documentaries and Shorts). The fact that for the past 23 years most of the directors have attended the event to present their films allows the audiences of Nantes to prolong the enjoyment of the screenings with discussions. Fernando Trueba, Patricia Ferreira, Cesc Gay, Imanol Uribe, Javier Rebollo, Paco León and Fernando Colomo, among others, travelled to Nantes to attend the festival in 2013. The exhibition of the work of photographer Jerónimo Álvarez added beauty and coherence to the overall event.
The Nantes Spanish Film Festival is continuing its commitment to disseminating and promoting Spanish cinema in France and Europe. Despite the widespread economic crisis and other equally serious obstacles, the organisers in Nantes continue to believe in Spanish filmmakers’ amazing ability to fill cinemas. For the 24
th festival, thanks to the PICE, the Nantes Spanish Film Festival is bringing to France
Chus Gutiérrez, Daniela Fejerman, Diego Galán, Gracia Querejeta, Helena Taberna, Icíar Bollaín, Inés París, Isabel Coixet, Judith Colell, Mar Coll, María Ripoll, Neus Ballús, Patricia Ferreira y Pilar Pérez Solano, who will present their work.
