Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) supports the "Creating Cultural Bridges" project by the Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival, a key initiative for the internationalization and reinterpretation of the Spanish Golden Age theatre. This ambitious project aims to transcend geographical and temporal borders, connecting the rich Spanish theatrical tradition with other cultures across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
The Almagro Festival, with nearly half a century of history, is a global reference point. With this new international itinerary, AC/E and ITAIC are boosting the Festival's projection toward its 50th anniversary in 2027.
Key Axes of the International Project
"Creating Cultural Bridges" is structured around three fundamental axes:
Training Workshops Abroad: Wandering Sounds of the Golden Age These are intensive experiences that bring classical verse into dialogue with local musical, scenic, and literary traditions. Flamenco singer Anamar García de Quero will lead these workshops, seeking cultural affinities and enriching the verse technique with new accents:
Turkey (Istanbul/Ankara): Exploration of the Sephardic, Ottoman, and Flamenco shared memory.
Morocco (Casablanca): An encounter with Arab orality, Andalusian music, and Maghrebi traditional narrative (in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute).
Portugal (Lisbon): Dialogue between Spanish and Portuguese dramaturgy and Fado, in collaboration with the Alkantara Festival.
Uruguay (Montevideo): Reflection on the transatlantic heritage of the Golden Age within the framework of FIDAE.
External Presence and Cooperation Networks The Festival strengthens its international presence with presentations, performances, and installations in Uruguay, Portugal, Turkey, and Morocco. The goal is to consolidate lasting cooperation networks with allied institutions (FIDAE, Alkantara Festival, Ankara University) and promote the Almagro Festival's cultural management model as an example of local roots and global openness.
Horizon 2027: The Golden Age in the Generation of '27 The project looks toward the Festival's 50th anniversary and the centenary of the Generation of '27. Work will focus on creating a major Exhibition dedicated to Margarita Xirgu (a key actress in the exile and dissemination of classical Spanish theatre in the Americas), in collaboration with institutions in Uruguay, such as the Margarita Xirgu Multidisciplinary School of Dramatic Art and the Solís Theatre in Montevideo. This axis includes classical costume workshops led by Lorenzo Caprile and academic programming that will activate historical memory as a tool for avant-garde creation.
With this project, AC/E and ITAIC demonstrate that the Golden Age is not a static archive, but a living and permeable language, capable of generating dialogue, research, and contemporary creation through "cultural bridges" that connect continents.
