Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) joins forces once again as a collaborating institution for the 9th edition of Mostra Espanha, the biennial cultural festival organized by the Ministry of Culture of Spain to promote creative exchange and highlight Spanish talent across Portugal.

As part of the visual arts program, AC/E supports the presentation of prominent historical and contemporary Spanish artworks in the "Invited Work" (Obra invitada) exhibition. Visitors can appreciate Joaquín Sorolla’s Valencianas (1915), on loan from the Sorolla Museum. Additionally, the Museum of Contemporary Art - MAC/CCB in Lisbon features two works by Maruja Mallo, Basuras (1930) and Naturaleza viva (1943), belonging to the María José Jove Foundation. Both exhibitions are presented in collaboration with AC/E and remain open through November 29.

Spain's presence in the Visual Arts extends across multiple venues and festivals throughout Portugal. Highlights include Idoia Cuesta's work at the Contextile Festival in Guimarães; Laura Pilar Delgado’s project Festina Lente at the Antecâmara Gallery in Lisbon; Antonio Guerra’s exhibition Umbral Mineral at the Imago Festival; Tete Alejandre’s Cargo at the Portuguese Center of Photography in Porto; a site-specific project by Los Bravú at 119 Marvila Studios (Lisbon); Irene Trapote’s textile exhibition Tramas del paisaje in Miranda do Douro; Rocío Royo Durán’s multidisciplinary project Astutas in Aveiro; Alonso Murillo Gil’s (Sea162) artistic intervention at the Porto de Mos quarries; and Carmen de Matos’ ephemeral interventions Invisible in the Alentejo region.

In Performing Arts, the line-up includes dance performances such as Breaking Beethoven in Évora; Hipótesis Ficción’s theatrical adaptation El retablo de las maravillas at the Instituto Cervantes in Lisbon; contemporary dance piece Montar un cuerpo by Colectivo La Triangular; Teatro del Noctámbulo’s production Jasón y las Furias; Pistacatro’s A serie Clopen at Theatro Circo in Braga; and Siberia company’s La Quijá, choreographed by Paloma Muñoz, taking place in Almada.

The Music segment features the fusion of flamenco and baroque in Rediscovering Spain (Fahmi Alqhai and Ana Morales) at Terra Sem Sombra; Rodrigo Cuevas’ tour La Belleza at the Misty Fest in Lisbon and Casa da Música in Porto; the collaboration between Sergio de Lope and João Barradas at the Algarve Music Series; and Moisés P. Sánchez’s homage to Manuel de Falla in Espinho and Oliveira de Frades.

Finally, the Literature and Audiovisual section presents a literary conversation between author Lara Moreno and her Portuguese translator Margarida Amado at the Saramago Foundation. Spanish cinema takes center stage at DocLisboa with a retrospective dedicated to Jonás Trueba, an industry session with Studio Kimchi at the Cinanima animation festival in Espinho, and the CineFiesta festival at UCI Cinemas in Lisbon and Porto.

About Mostra Espanha

Established in 2009, Mostra Espanha is a biennial platform organized by the Subdirectorate General for International Relations and the European Union of the Ministry of Culture of Spain, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Portugal, with the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Instituto Cervantes in Lisbon. In this 9th edition, the festival also expanded its scope to Brazil on the occasion of Spain being named Guest of Honor at the São Paulo Book Fair.
