The creators will develop their research and production projects over six weeks between Mexico City and Oaxaca with the support of curator Luz Massot.

Madrid / A Coruña, 07/21/2026 — The Centro de Arte Fundación María José Jove (FMJJ) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) have announced the selection for the third edition of their International Artistic Residencies Program in Mexico City / Oaxaca. Following the evaluation of all submissions, the selection committee has chosen the projects by artists Andrés Izquierdo and Rosa Tharrats.

This joint initiative aims to promote cultural exchange and contemporary artistic production between Spain and Latin America, strengthening the international projection of Spanish creators. For this 2026 edition, the program focuses on situated research and practices connected to the textile realm as a space for material experimentation, memory, and community.

Both artists will undertake a six-week production stay between September and October 2026, divided between Mexico City and Oaxaca de Juárez. During this period, they will receive curatorial support from Luz Massot, as well as technical and logistical backing from the local host institutions: Fundación Marso and Proyectos Públicos in the Mexican capital, and La Curtiduría Centro de Artes Visuales in Oaxaca.

Transformation of matter and community knowledge

The project Emanaciones, by Andrés Izquierdo (Madrid, 1993), proposes a survey of flower markets, candle shops, dye shops, and recycling facilities, drawing on a methodology inspired by the figure of the vulture (zopilote)—a scavenger bird deeply tied to the Mexican imaginary as an agent of renewal. Using materials gathered during his stay, Izquierdo will construct a series of suspended sculptures through techniques of assemblage and transformation, advancing his exploration into the material processes of change.

Meanwhile, Rosa Tharrats (Barcelona, 1983) will carry out Tejer el agua, a research project that approaches water as a memory in motion and a connector between bodies and territories. The artist will collaborate with Zapotec communities, craftswomen, and local workshops to examine the intersection between community water management systems and textile techniques traditionally associated with care. Her work will culminate in the creation of wearable textile sculptures and a collective performance in public space.

The outcomes of both projects will be featured in a public presentation at the conclusion of the residency, reaffirming the partnership between the FMJJ and AC/E in supporting emerging creation and building transatlantic creative networks.
