Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) announces that the AC/E Award for Best Direction of a Spanish Film at the 22nd edition of the Seville European Film Festival (SEFF) has been granted to "Els mals noms" (2025), directed by Marc Ortiz Prades. The award ceremony took place last Saturday, November 15.
This recognition highlights AC/E’s commitment to national film talent and creative excellence within the context of European auteur cinema.
The award-winning film, "Els mals noms" (The Bad Names), was selected by the International Jury for its narrative rigor and courage. The work narrates the true story of Florencio Pla Meseguer—registered at birth as Teresa—an intersex person who, during the decades following the Spanish Civil War, lived a clandestine life as a Maquis guerrilla fighter, ultimately claiming his identity as a man in a hostile rural environment. The film contrasts the myth manipulated by Francoist propaganda with the complex reality of the individual.
The AC/E Award, which includes a prize of €10,000, goes beyond financial support. As part of AC/E's strategic commitment, the organization assumes the internationalization of the winning film, actively promoting its exhibition at leading Ibero-American film festivals and various cultural venues abroad, through the PICE program.
This historical collaboration with the Institute of Culture and Arts of Seville (ICAS) reaffirms AC/E’s mission to foster national creation, guarantee the visibility of Spanish talent in the international arena, and strengthen networking between our filmmakers and the global film industry.
Congratulations to Marc Ortiz Prades and the entire team of "Els mals noms" for this well-deserved recognition!rades y a todo el equipo de "Els mals noms" por este merecido reconocimiento!
