On May 18, International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated worldwide. This initiative, promoted by ICOM since 1977, highlights the fundamental role of museums in cultural exchange and the development of peace among peoples. In 2026, the commemoration is presented under the theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” focusing on the ability of museum spaces to foster mutual understanding and collaboration within the current global context.
As every year, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) joins this celebration alongside RTVE (Radio 3) and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), organizing one of the most vibrant cultural days on the calendar: 15 hours of culture, interviews, and live music.
Special Programming at the Reina Sofía
On Friday, May 22, 2026, Radio 3 will move its entire broadcasting team to the Patio Nouvel of the Reina Sofía Museum to broadcast uninterrupted programming from 07:00 to 23:00. The event combines theoretical reflection on the role of museums with top-tier musical performances designed to bring contemporary art closer to younger audiences.
Free Access: Throughout the day, admission to the Reina Sofía Museum will be free of charge.
Live Music: The Patio Nouvel stage will host concerts by prominent artists, following the success of previous editions which featured figures such as C. Tangana, Vetusta Morla, Amaia, or Los Planetas.
DJ Sessions: The Sabatini Building garden will also host daytime sessions to complete the sonic experience.
Broadcasting: The day can be followed live on the usual Radio 3 broadcast, as well as via videostreaming on the station's official website and app.
An Alliance for Culture
This activity is carried out within the framework of the collaboration agreement between RTVE and AC/E, in effect until 2030, aimed at promoting and driving projects that disseminate the cultural and artistic wealth of our society. With an average attendance exceeding 12,000 people, IMD at the Reina Sofía has established itself as an essential meeting point where the museum opens up to the streets and music serves as a bridge to unite the community.
