"Las Hijas del Jazz" at the San Sebastián Film Festival
From September 20 to 28, the San Sebastián International Film Festival will host the exhibition "Las Hijas del Jazz", a unique experience that fuses the past and present of female art and freedom. After its successful inauguration at the Carlos Fuentes Bookstore Gallery, the exhibition will be presented at the festival to pay tribute to the women who, through their talent and courage, paved the way in the film industry and beyond.
Inspired by the glamour, aesthetic rupture, and emancipatory impulse of 1920s and 30s Hollywood, the exhibition celebrates the spirit of historical figures like Virginia Woolf and María Zambrano, connecting it with the talent of contemporary Spanish actresses. The project, conceived by Omar Ayyashi, brings together portraits of prominent actresses such as Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Milena Smit, Ana Rujas, and Clara Lago, who embody the essence of those pioneers.
The exhibition includes 36 large-format photographs (180x138 cm) and 60 additional works from a private collection. For an immersive experience, each portrait is accompanied by a literary audio piece interpreted by the actresses themselves, accessible via QR codes.
In the words of its creator, Omar Ayyashi, "this exhibition is a journey between eras and continents. A tribute to all the women who paved the way and to those who today travel them with freedom, beauty, and determination."
