During October 2026, the city of Granada will host Réquiem por Lorca, a large-scale civic and performative project commemorating the 90th anniversary of the assassination of Federico García Lorca. Organized with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the project is conceived as a collective act of shared memory, public reparation, and the celebration of grief through live arts, literature, and music.
From October 15 to 18, 2026, the project will weave a contemporary requiem across four consecutive days. The initiative symbolically begins and ends with the manual ringing of the bell at the Torre de la Vela. The thematic core of the project is guided by the calligram Rosa de la muerte, created by Lorca in 1934, whose lines and narrative structure give title to each of the four acts:
Act I — Agua para tu amor (Thursday, October 15, 2026): Dedicated to mourning and the beginning of collective lamentation, this act starts at 5:00 PM with the recovery of the historic irrigation bell-ringing at the Torre de la Vela—which historically regulated water turns in the Vega de Granada—performed by the Campaneros de Granada.
Act II — Tierra para tu alma (Friday, October 16, 2026): A song of loss traversing public spaces and city streets through choral performances, dance, and spatial interventions.
Act III — Fuego para tu ceniza (Saturday, October 17, 2026): A nocturnal ceremony interweaving sacred musical traditions and dramatic readings across heritage venues in Granada.
Act IV — Aire para tu boca (Sunday, October 18, 2026): A closing chapter dedicated to hope and future memory, culminating in poetic and acoustic interventions surrounding the Carmen de los Mártires and the Alhambra.

Curatorial Trilogy
Under the artistic direction of Maral Kekejian and Pep Olona, Réquiem por Lorca is part of a curatorial trilogy launched in 2024 exploring how contemporary artistic creation can inhabit public space and collective memory. The trilogy began in Madrid with an initial #Réquiem (centered around Mozart's work during the POETAS Festival) and will conclude in 2027 with Réquiem al exilio at the Spanish Book Fair in New York, coinciding with the centenary of the Generation of '27.
