From October 15 to 18, 2026, Granada will host a large-scale civic and artistic intervention to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the assassination of Federico García Lorca. Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) collaborates in this collective chant to memory, public reparation, and contemporary creation.
Activity Overview
Requiem for Lorca is a large-scale civic and performative project conceived as an act of shared memory and public reparation. Over four days, the city of Granada will transform into the stage for a collective work that weaves together folk tradition, literature, music, and live arts to pay tribute to the figure of Federico García Lorca and all victims of war.
The guiding thread of the project is structured around the calligram Rosa de la muerte (Rose of Death), created by Lorca in 1934. This graphic poem provides both the title and the narrative framework for the four acts comprising the initiative:
Act I — Water for your love (Thursday, October 15): An exploration of grief and lamentation featuring the flamenco voice of Rocío Márquez, an ethereal theremin performance by Javier Díez Ena, and a sound gathering at the Centro Federico García Lorca.
Act II — Earth for your soul (Friday, October 16): A collective chant for loss traversing the streets of the city with a complaint choir, spatial dance performances, and a choral elegy in Plaza de las Pasiegas composed by Guille Galván featuring over 200 voices.
Act III — Fire for your ashes (Saturday, October 17): A nocturnal ceremony linking the Cant de la Sibil·la at La Madraza with a reading of Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías intertwined with Mozart's Requiem inside Granada Cathedral.
Act IV — Air for your mouth (Sunday, October 18): A closing chapter dedicated to hope, gathering contemporary poets at Carmen de los Mártires and culminating with the ringing of church bells and a colorful smoke choreography at The Alhambra.

Curatorial Trilogy
Requiem for Lorca is part of a curatorial trilogy directed by Maral Kekejian and Pep Olona. Initiated in 2024 with a first #Requiem in Madrid (built around Mozart's work), the trilogy will conclude in 2027 with Requiem for Exile at the Spanish Language Book Fair in New York, coinciding with the centenary of the Generation of '27.
