The Spanish Pavilion at the Osaka Kansai 2025 World Expo has been awarded the Silver Prize in the Architecture and Landscape category.
The award recognizes Type A pavilions (self-built) of more than 1,500 square meters.
After receiving the award, José Andrés Torres Mora, Commissioner General and President of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), stated: “This is an award for Spain for its participation in the Expo, for Spanish architecture—especially the studios of Néstor Montenegro, Rocío Pina of Enorme Estudio, and Fernando Muñoz of Smart & Green Design—for our builder, Takehide Murakami, and his entire team at Murakami General Construction.” Torres Mora also praised “the intelligent and passionate dedication” of the AC/E teams and the Spanish Pavilion at Osaka, an international event that opened on April 13 and closes tomorrow, October 13.
The Spanish Pavilion took as its reference the Kuroshio Current, a powerful ocean current that influences Japan's climate and biodiversity and that between the 16th and 19th centuries gave rise to the Manila Galleon, the Spanish trade route that connected Asia with the Americas across the Pacific.
The award is given by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), organizer of universal and international exhibitions. The Gold Award went to the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, designed by the firm Foster + Partners, led by Norman Foster, and the Bronze Award was given to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Pavilion by the Earth to Ether Design Collective, a group of Emirati, Japanese, and other experts.
Today's award is the fourth for the Spanish Pavilion in Osaka. At the 2025 World Expolympics, held on September 23, Spain received the Silver Award for Best Exterior Architecture, the Silver Award for Best Sustainable Pavilion, and the Bronze Award for Best Thematic Concept.
